for Older Adults
Imagine enjoying every moment of your life, playing with your grandkids, traveling, preparing a meal, or feeling at ease in your home. Now, pause for a moment. Are you truly living life to the fullest, or has the fear of falling held you back?
As we age, many of us feel the weight of worries; will I fall? Am I too old for that? These fears often stem from the belief that falling and decreased activity are just part of aging.
Feeling isolated or restricted in the activities you love, uncertainty about home safety, and difficulty navigating everyday tasks can all contribute to this fear.
Many older adults tend to avoid activities altogether, which can lead to unnecessary fear and limit their lifestyle.
It’s easy to overlook the value of seeking out the right knowledge and resources, but relying only on caution and reducing activity might not provide the safety or quality of life you're hoping for.
We want you to embrace everyday living.
Whether you take the afternoon to:
navigate a crowded farmers market
host a dinner party
walk your pet
or go shopping with friends
for the rest of your life.
Maintaining your independence starts with practical solutions that empower you to feel safe and confident in your daily activities.
With a focus on effective exercises to enhance your strength and balance, you’ll discover techniques that shift your mindset from fear to empowerment.
The Agency on Aging Area 4’s Health Promotion Program offers fall prevention resources, including the Live Strong & Safe presentation and evidence-based curriculums like A Matter of Balance and Bingocize. Participants often ask, “What’s next?”; highlighting the need for a continuous education pathway.
The Live Strong & Safe Course is a virtual resource with on-demand access to reinforce and expand on your fall prevention knowledge.

“My awareness has increased about my fall risk and what I can do about it.”
"I was very pleased with myself when the whole thing was done because I felt like I had mentally handled it very well, I didn't get scared, I didn't panic, I knew right away that I was okay, and I just kind of mentally worked through the steps of how do I safely get myself back up again. And I accomplished that. I feel like that is a direct result of this program and what I can do about it.”
“I learned what alterations/modifications to do to decrease my fall risk in my home.”
“I am doing chair exercises while I watch the morning news instead of just sitting there.”
"I think that my awareness has really peaked and I'm more conscious of doing things that keep me safe. This class has taught me to be more mindful"
“I started exercising because of the class, I realized I felt better and enjoyed doing the activities we learned in class at home.”
“The program helped with problem-solving and made me more aware of the fall risks that were out there and what I can do about it.”
“I am exercising more than I did before the class.”
“When I am watching a movie at home, I get up every 30 minutes and do a few easy exercises or stretches we learned in class.”
“I took this class with my mom; it was very helpful for me because my knees are bad. The class also helped me understand that I was going about things with my mom the wrong way. I would do things, so she did not have to, without realizing I was taking her independence away. For example, she feeds the birds so I would fill the bird feeder because I was scared she would fall trying to do it herself. But I made a clear path so she could do it, so instead of taking away the task from her, she can now do it safely. We are both learning to be safe and keep our independence.”

Agency on Aging Area 4 (AAA4) has 50 years of experience providing services to older adults and is a lead partner in 5 Aging and Disability Resource Connections (ADRC). We serve more than 500,000 older adults throughout a 7-county region, and partner with the Sacramento StopFalls Coalition that includes multiple healthcare partners. We have experience providing evidence-based fall prevention education, including A Matter of Balance, Bingocize, and Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP).
Our Health Promotion Instructors, Janet and Brittany have offered fall prevention education to older adults within our service area for the past two years. Together, they have gained knowledge from following evidence-based fall prevention education, being trained in two evidence-based curriculums focused on fall prevention.
Brittany is a Master Trainer for A Matter of Balance fall prevention program. In fall prevention, the true experts are the older adults and their experiences. During our workshops, participants often share their experiences and problem-solving solutions that resonate with others.
Even if you haven’t been hurt yet, each fall increases your chances of future injuries. The course helps you become more mindful of fall risks and teaches ways to slow down and be safer, potentially preventing future falls that could result in serious harm.
Decluttering can feel overwhelming, but our course offers practical strategies to modify your home for safety, one step at a time. You’ll learn how to tackle one room at a time or ask for help from friends and family, reducing fall risks without feeling stressed.
Incorporating new habits takes time, but our course provides realistic solutions. You’ll discover simple ways to fit exercise into your day at your own pace, and we’ll point you to resources for quick, nutritious meal options that don’t require hours in the kitchen.
You might not notice all the potential risks in your home. Our course includes a room-by-room guide to help you spot hidden hazards that you may have overlooked. Many people live in cluttered or unsafe spaces without realizing the danger until they experience a fall.
